Use this vocabulary book companion to add to your election activities while improving vocabulary and reading comprehension. This resource is to be used with the book Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio.

Using picture books is a great way to teach vocabulary in an engaging and authentic way.

While students are learning vocabulary words and strategies, they’ll also learn how an election works in a fun way.

Evidence from the science of reading research, indicates that to be successful at reading comprehension, students need explicit and implicit vocabulary instruction.

Explicit vocabulary instruction is direct instruction where you tell and explain the meaning of a word using a student-friendly definition and discuss using examples. Implicit vocabulary instruction is when you teach kids how to figure out the meaning of a word by making inferences about the definition. They use clues from the text to figure out word meaning.

 

Why teach vocabulary using picture books?

Well-written children’s books help kids build knowledge and the language in books is richer than any other source. When you read aloud picture books to kids, it helps them build vocabulary, print and linguistic awareness, knowledge of text structure, and information about the world and how different people live. We can expose kids to so many great stories and help them learn about a variety of topics just from picture books. All while helping them build vocabulary.

I’ve taught third grade for more than 15 years and am currently a second grade ELA (English Language Arts) teacher.
